About the Artist

Janet Thackray trained at Leeds College of Art in the Sixties and worked as a commercial artist with advertising agencies in Leeds and Harrogate. moving to Cheshire and having a young family she switched to freelance work in Figure and Fashion Illustration for newspapers, magazines and catalogues. As her family grew her career went on hold but she continued to draw and paint oils for pleasure.

In the late eighties Janet began water-colour painting, took a college course in Art and Design and also qualified as an Adult Education Tutor. She now undertakes commissions, is a demonstrator for Art Groups and societies and exhibits her paintings over the North of England; some having been sold in America and Australia. She also has outdoor and indoor workshops throughout the year.

Currently she has classes for the East Yorkshire Adult Education Centres and takes private and small groups at her studio in Patrington. She believes that learning to draw is the first essential and her own sketch books are full of pencil and pen-and-wash drawings. She finds water colour painting exciting and spontaneous.

" Although a painting may be planned, you never know what may happen ! "
